The Editor of TeeVee on How This Site Will Be Different

April 1, 2004  |  Dear television lover,

About the same time an upstart Web site named Salon.com began to challenge the rules of journalism, another upstart Web site -- TeeVee.org -- was just getting its start challenging the rules of writing about television on a personal Web page. So it's only fitting that the larger, established upstart Web site would swallow up the smaller upstart Web site to create a single, nominally larger upstart Web site that continues to challenge the rules of one thing or another. And it's only fitting that as the founder of that upstart Web site -- the second one, I mean, the one about television -- I would be here to welcome you to the brave new world of Salon TeeVee.

UltramercialIf you're one of TeeVee's 234 dedicated readers, you're already familiar with our story. But for you newcomers, TeeVee began as a Family Matters fan site (Our unofficial episode guide -- The Unexpurgated Urkel -- still ranks in the top 94,000 of Amazon.com sales, right behind La Femme Peta: The Unauthorized Biography of Peta Wilson) before becoming a full-featured Web destination for TV criticism. In our nearly eight years of existence, we've seen other TV Web sites come and go, with their creators either getting profiled in The New York Times, signing lucrative book deals, or reaping dot-com millions before they cashed out in advance of the Internet crash. Us? We've been biding our time, churning out interesting copy and waiting for the right opportunity -- like teaming up with Salon! -- to come along.

And considering our last partnership was with the highly successful Plastic.com, we know from golden opportunities.

Salon TeeVee marks a new era at this Web address, but things aren't going to change too much around here, apart from the massive site redesign. You can expect the same hilarious television commentary and criticism from the same authors you've come to enjoy, except for those that don't fit in with our new editorial focus. Other than that, it's the same high-quality content we've always delivered, along with more advertising.

So we'd like to welcome our old readers to the new TeeVee. We'd also like to extend a similar welcome to our new readers, who we hope will soon become old readers. And to all our readers -- old, new or anywhere in between -- we hope you spend some time poking around the new site, particularly in the areas designed to help us generate click-through revenue.

Happy reading, lovers of TV. We hope you'll soon become lovers of Salon TeeVee as well.
