I Like the Academy Awards

I watched the Academy Awards Ceremony this past weekend and, as I nearly always do, I enjoyed the show. I did not find it too long, I was not vexed by awkwardly-scripted banter between presenters, and I was entirely unperturbed by the presence of comedy bits that weren’t really all that funny.

You see, I understand what the Academy Awards Show is. I’m kind of surprised that no one else does, but every year you see reams of people (yes, reams!) complaining that this year’s show seemed a little long and there were some dead spots. Of course there were! That’s how the show works! If you tuned in and saw a tight two-hour production with nothing but emotional, heart-felt acceptance speeches, tasteful production numbers, and jokes that everyone finds hilarious, you wouldn’t know what to do. It would be very disturbing.

I think it’s all a matter of attitude. What’s going to happen next? A big, silly dance number, sure. Oh, and John Freaking Travolta is dancing in it for no reason. Fantastic! And he has very peculiar hair? Keep it coming!

It really just boils down to this: I don’t watch the Oscars for high-quality television. I watch it for the Oscars! Isn’t that enough?
